William Barton arrived in New South Wales, 1827, as the first resident secretary and accountant of the Australian Agricultural Company. He resigned in 1832 and became an estate agent and the first stockbroker in Sydney. His son William was a representative of Sheppard and Alger, a Sydney firm, at Major's Creek, New South Wales, c.1852 and another son, Sir Edmund Barton, 1849-1920, became Australia's first Prime Minister.
